BLUE SHARK SNORKEL

BOOK NOW

Join us as we depart from the Barbican landing stage, Plymouth UK, on the search for blue sharks many miles offshore. We will go way beyond Plymouth Sound to head out to the open ocean on a 1.5-2 hour journey to an area where blue sharks are known to be passing through between the months of June to October. There is plenty of opportunity to spot other species of marine life along the way, such as cetaceans and atlantic blue fin tuna - we never know what we might see! Our skippers have been working with sharks for decades and the team will always use their combined knowledge to give you the best chances possible to try and encounter them.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY

After picking up all of our lovely customers and getting the briefings and waiver forms out of the way, we make our way around up to 20-30 miles or more off shore in search of the blue sharks. Along the way out to the sharks, we are constantly on the lookout for marine life such as dolphins, porpoises, whales, seals, seabirds, and more where we will stop the boat if we come across anything interesting in our path on route out to allow for good viewing. When we reach our destination, the frozen chum / fish are dropped into the water along the side of the boat and then it is just a waiting game! The sharks may appear after as little as 30 minutes or in some cases a few hours. However, once the sharks appear it is common for them to stay with us for a while.

  • We are strict with the gear that is needed to be worn for this trip and this trip is NOT for the fainthearted and is definitely not aimed at beginner snorkellers. You must be over 14 years of age and be a STRONG swimmer, able to comfortably swim and use a mask and snorkel in 80m+ deep open water and be able to tread water. You do not need a dive qualification to join our trips. This is snorkelling only, no diving.

Some customers also find that when drifting and waiting for the sharks to show, they may start to suffer from sea sickness. Please ensure to take sea sickness precautions to be sure you can be as comfortable as possible. We will always have safety ropes attached to the back and front of the boat for customers to use.

We can cater for film crew,  underwater photographers and film makers. Please email us if you have any specific requirements or questions in terms of filming.

    • Arrive at least 15/20 minutes before trip departure time to allow time for parking and for our guide to meet you and collect remaining payment.

    • One of our guides will walk you down to the boat, and you will have a short safety briefing about the vessel before we get offshore.

    • Sit back and relax, but keep your eyes peeled for any wildlife as we start our long 1.5/2 hour journey out to the shark spot.

    • Upon arrival at the site, the chum is placed in the water and we wait for the sharks and hope that they show. (This can be anything from 15 minutes to 4+ hours!!!)  *PLEASE NOTE - NOTHING IN NATURE IS GUARANTEED and although we have an 85% average success rate, sometimes for whatever reasons the sharks may not be in the area / show or want to interact. This is the risk you take and no refunds will be given if no sharks are seen unfortunately.

    • While chum is being placed in the water, we will give you a shark safety briefing about being in the water,  how to behave and act around the sharks, emergency procedures etc. Everyone will then get changed. Throughout the day we will also tell you more information about the biology and ecology of blue sharks.

    • When entering the water, you will have a shark snorkel guide in with you at all times.

    • We aim to return to the Barbican Landing Stage anywhere from 3-4pm. Depending on the sharks and weather conditions we could be back at a different time.

  • KIT THAT MUST BE WORN FOR THIS TRIP (you can either bring your own or hire from us. If you need to hire kit, this is not included in your ticket price and will need to be added separately)

    • A bathing suit, bikini or swim shorts WHICH SHOULD BE WORN UNDER YOUR CLOTHES before boarding the vessel. It makes changing into the following equipment easier for all.

    • • A FULL BODY thick wetsuit (5-7mm recommended) in a dark colour - you MUST only wear a wetsuit that is black / grey / a very dark blue, camo is fine, as long as your suit DOES NOT have any bright colours or bright coloured patches (although tiny logos are ok) that may spark attention from the sharks. Sharks are very sensitive to contrast and so we have these mandatory rules in place to minimise unwanted attention or curiosity from the sharks. That means absolutely NO yellows, no oranges, no bright pinks, reds or greens or any other bright colours. We are extremely strict on this and if you turn up on the day with any item of kit that does not follow these guidelines, we reserve the right to refuse entry to the water WITHOUT refund.

    • If you do tend to get extra cold then we would suggest wearing a rashguard or thermal layer underneath or over the top. IF YOU ARE HIRING A WETSUIT WE RECOMMEND GETTING A SIZE UP FROM YOUR USUAL CLOTHING SIZE.

    •  Dark colour diving hood no bright patches or colours

    • Dark colour diving boots / diving socks WITH dark fins

    • Dark colour diving gloves

    •  Dark colour snorkel mask, complete with a snorkel - BLACK/GREY/DARK BLUE SNORKEL SET NO BRIGHT COLOURS OR PATCHES

***PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF THE ABOVE EQUIPMENT IS MANDATORY AND MUST BE WORN TO PARTICIPATE. SHARKS ARE SENSITIVE TO CONTRASTING COLOURS AND SO WE HAVE THESE GUIDELINES IN PLACE TO MINIMISE RISKS***

  • You must understand that we are diligent about checking the latest and updated weather forecast and sea conditions. Sea conditions offshore are COMPLETELY different to the weather forecasts on land, and update every few hours. If the conditions are not suitable for us to be putting people into the water far offshore, the trip will be cancelled. You will receive a full refund or the option to reschedule (subject to availability if this were to happen). We aim to give 24-48 hours notice of a trip cancellation, but if the weather is borderline we reserve the right to cancel AT ANY TIME. We are not liable for costs of any lost accommodation or transport bookings if the trip is unable to go ahead. We would recommend booking more than 1 trip if you are coming to the area or travelling a long distance just to see the sharks, to give yourself the best chance in terms of weather and sightings (this is the UK weather we are dealing with, after all!)

Gio was invited last year to the premiere of David Attenborough's new movie 'OCEAN', is an ambassador for PADI, and now a columnist for oceanographic magazine.
